Have you ever speculated who created basketball? Maybe even if different cultures played it and how they did? What the original rules were? How it has been altered since it was first invented? All of these answers can be found in this paper. Did you know that our ancestors played a game sort of like basketball before it was even invented? Centuries ago in Mexico, people played games where they used a ball and hoop. They would take turns trying to toss the ball into the basket and keep track of how many times each person made a basket. Sometimes the adults and the kids would play this game together and sometimes they played individually. The very first people to attempt this new game were the members of Dr. James Naismith’s gym class. At first, Naismith was slightly worried that the students would not like his new game. But after a while he noticed that the students were enjoying it. Of course he had to make a set of rules, so here are the original 13 rules of basketball: The ball can be thrown in any direction with one or both hands. The ball can be batted in any direction with one or both hands (batting with the fist is not authorized). A player cannot run with the ball. The player must throw the ball from the spot he catches it on, allowance to be made for a man who catches the ball when running at a good speed if he tries to stop. The ball must be held in or between the hands; the arms or body must not be used to hold it. Any shouldering, holding, pushing, tripping, or striking an opponent shall not be allowed; the first infringement of this rule by any player shall count as a foul, the second shall disqualify him until the next goal is made, or, if there is evident intent to injure the person, for the whole of the game, no sub allowed. A foul is striking at the ball with the fist, violation of Rules 3, 4, and such described in Rule 5. If either side makes three consecutive fouls, it shall count as a goal for the other team (consecutive means without the other team in the mean time making a foul). At this late date, virtually every American knows the most widely broadcast fallout from the Enron scandal- the collapse of a mega-corporation, jail sentences for many of key players in the scandal, and the realization that no company is invincible, especially given the fact that its very caretakers were in fact its killers.   Beyond this, however, there are moral consequences for American society overall, knowing now that highly paid executives stole the retirement futures of those who worked so hard to build up the company of Enron. Because of Enron, we now are faced with the fact that this was not just a business issue, but a human one as well.
